A low battery representing burnout

What is burnout?

Burnout is chronic physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress at work. Three signs to look for:

  • Exhaustion that rest does not fix.
  • Detachment from work and colleagues.
  • Reduced performance and effectiveness.

Burnout in Malaysia

A 2024 Employment Hero survey reported that 67% of Malaysian employees felt burnt out in the previous three months, with millennials the most affected. Higher productivity can come at the cost of health.

The impact

  • Mental and physical health problems
  • Lower morale and engagement
  • Higher turnover and absenteeism
  • Higher healthcare costs

What employers can do

  • Manage workloads against headcount.
  • Support mental health, including through an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
  • Offer flexibility in how and where people work.
  • Listen through surveys and regular check-ins.

What employees can do

Recognise the warning signs early, set boundaries, and talk to a trusted person or a professional.
