How to engage with your employees on wellbeing

Morale and wellbeing affect engagement, retention and revenue. Asking the right questions beats guessing.

A survey question and a five-star response

Employee morale and wellbeing affect engagement, retention and revenue. Asking employees the right questions helps you avoid spending on guesswork.

Five areas to ask about

  • Physical. Sleep and exercise habits.
  • Emotional. Stress levels and comfort discussing mental health.
  • Social. Connection with the team.
  • Societal. Inclusivity and community involvement.
  • Work. Sense of meaning and control over time.

The leadership gap

A Deloitte and Workplace Intelligence survey, reported in Forbes, found that executives often rate their support of employees more favourably than employees do. Asking directly helps close that gap.

Recognition counts

Studies link recognition and gratitude to better wellbeing, lower burnout and stronger working relationships. Simple steps such as verbal praise or a thank-you note are a good start.

Then act on what you hear

Regular check-ins and wellness surveys are a starting point, but data collection is not worth much without meaningful action. An EAP gives employees a confidential place to turn, and gives HR the trends without exposing individuals.
